OUR PLAN

We have a positive, evidence-based and independently costed plan* to build a future for all of us.

Real action on climate change

The urgent need to tackle climate change was my driving motivation to stand for this seat against the Liberal Party.

Coal is the major cause of climate change. The Liberal and Labor parties have no plan to phase out coal. They have taken millions of dollars in donations from the fossil fuel industry, putting their big donors ahead of the community and ignoring the science.

I joined the only party with a serious, fully-costed plan, backed by industry experts, to phase out coal and transition to clean, renewable energy and drive our economy into the future. Your other options may have positive convictions, but they do not have a plan.

  • A planned transition from fossil fuels to affordable and reliable 100% renewable energy
  • Phase out coal, stop Adani, support workers with a $1B transition fund
  • Support investment in solar, saving renters up to $890 a year
  • Fund electric infrastructure and jump-start the inevitable transition to clean, affordable vehicles. Transition the industry so that no new petrol or diesel cars are sold in Australia after 2030
  • Invest $50M a year across the nation for local climate adaptation projects

A strong, sustainable economy

We will drive a sustainable economy and tackle climate change through large scale investment in renewable technology. We’ll transition away from coal and export clean, affordable and reliable electricity. We’ll invest in the clean energy jobs of the future.

We recognise that good economic management means taking care of people and our planet. Our future will only be a prosperous one if we build our economy in line with the principles of long-term sustainability and science, rather than short-term self-interest and political point-scoring.

  • Create 180,000 jobs nationwide in renewable industries
  • Harness Australia’s natural resources to create a renewable export industry
  • Guarantee prompt payments for small businesses
  • Reduce taxes for 24,000 local small businesses through a 110% wages credit

INTEGRITY & TRANSPARENCY IN POLITICS

Our democracy is the best tool we have to care for people, plan for the future and protect the environment, but it has to work for everyone. Right now, corporate influence in politics is getting in the way of progress on everything, from tackling climate change to housing affordability.

Since 2012, the Liberal and Labor parties have taken over $100 million dollars from big corporations including the mining, gambling, banking and property development industries. The Greens refuse donations from corporations trying to buy political influence. We are funded by and represent the community.

  • Establish a Federal ICAC to investigate corruption in politics
  • Ban politicians from taking cushy lobbying jobs for five years after they retire
  • Ban the corporate donations that corrupt our democracy
  • Cap political election expenditure and increase transparency

WORLD CLASS HEALTH & SOCIAL SERVICES

We should all have access to high quality, free health care & education, affordable housing and a strong social safety net that looks after us when we are out of work, as we age or if we have a disability.

But for decades, Liberal and Labor governments have sold us out by giving tax handouts and subsidies to their big corporate donors, instead of investing in the public services that we all need. It’s about choices and priorities – and time after time, they’ve let people down by cutting services and making us pay more and more for the things that used to be free. We will:

  • Deliver extra funding for hospitals and invest in preventative healthcare
  • Bring dental services into Medicare
  • Improve the quality of aged care by increasing staffing ratios
  • Invest $491M for community level mental health outreach programs

LOCAL LIVEABILITY & FUTURE FOCUSED PLANNING

Our suburbs are growing and we need a plan to protect heritage and the things we love about Kooyong. For decades, dysfunctional Liberal and Labor governments have failed to plan ahead and meet the demands of our growing cities and regions. We will:

  • Reduce congestion by investing $25B in public transport, cycling and walking infrastructure
  • Ensure development in our suburbs is appropriate
  • Fund environmental conservation projects through a national $72.5M local greening fund

A FAIRER, COMPASSIONATE SOCIETY

One of the major reasons I have chosen the Greens is that all their policies come down to a fundamental concern for human rights. Everyone deserves to feel safe and to have equal opportunities in life, no matter our background, ability, gender, sexuality, income or postcode. To ensure a safe, equal world for all, we can’t let a few powerful voices turn us against each other or divide us based on where we come from, who we love or what we look like. We will:

  • Close offshore detention centres & establish a regional solution
  • Build 500,000 public homes nationally and fund homelessness services
  • Increase Newstart & Youth Allowance by $75 p/week
  • Work with First Nations People for a plan for sovereignty and meaningful treaties
  • Fully fund the NDIS, invest in making our physical and digital world more accessible

LIFELONG EDUCATION & TRAINING

Everyone has a right to education, whether you are leaving school, changing careers, retraining later in life or looking to gain new skills and knowledge. We will:

  • Invest $225M in Kooyong schools over the next 10 years
  • Ensure every child has a place in childcare, supporting 5,600 local families
  • Restore funding to tertiary education and support educators with greater job stability
  • Bring back free University for first entry and TAFE
  • Invest $3B to make Australia a global leader in emerging research and technology

PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT & ANIMALS

We are fortunate to live in one of the most diverse and beautiful places in the world. But it’s under threat like never before. Our Great Barrier Reef is dying and our farmers are suffering through intense drought as a result of climate change caused by the mining, burning and exporting of coal and gas.

For decades, Liberal and Labor governments have let corporations get away with trashing our planet for their own private profit. Both parties have stood by while their big donors have dug up our environment, destroyed our climate and sold off our green spaces, with little accountability. We will:

  • Overhaul outdated laws to protect our environment
  • Introduce a new generation of environment laws to replace the EPBC Act
  • Fund recovery plan for threatened species in Australia
  • Establish an Environmental Protection Authority
  • End the recycling crisis with a consistent national approach to recycling
  • Tackle the waste crisis by building a circular economy, invest in waste avoidance and resource recovery initiatives
  • End live exports through a smooth transition to local processing of product for export
  • Ban animal-tested in the cosmetics industry

*Our independently costed plan is balanced with a comprehensive suite of revenue-raising measures, including ending the billions of dollars of government handouts made to multinational corporations. See all our policies at greens.org.au/policies

I’m running for election in Kooyong because the time has come to take urgent action on climate change, to care for people seeking asylum and to get the influence of big corporates out of politics.
